Diabetes mellitus

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease in which the body does not produce enough insulin or does not respond normally to insulin, causing excessively high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Diuresis (elimination of urine) and thirst increase, and weight can be lost even unintentionally. Over time this condition becomes uncontrollable and promotes other complex metabolic diseases. It is also established that people’s predisposition to this disease is unfortunately independent of age.

However, sirtuins, which are typically activated during caloric restriction, play a key role in optimising the effect of blood glucose levels in diabetic patients. Among the different types of sirtuins, some are known to regulate the pathophysiology of the diabetic condition.

Furthermore, the role of other sirtuins in understanding the function and regulatory mechanism in diabetes mellitus is still under development. In this scientific research, we have focused on recent studies that help us better understand the beneficial role of sirtuins in this chronic disease and how they regulate pathophysiology in the diabetic condition.
